A new batch of stimulus payments is en route to residents of a few states that have authorized additional COVID aid, amid rumors of a possible fourth federal payment.

Residents of Maine and New Mexico may receive another check as early as June due to the passage of additional economic assistance legislation in both states.

The bill follows a similar action taken in Alaska last week, when the state Senate approved a spending package that included $5,500 cash payments to Alaskans.

With inflation at a four-decade high, a number of state governors and other politicians have advocated for additional stimulus checks or tax rebates to assist Americans in managing their finances.

Hawaii, Pennsylvania, California, Minnesota, Colorado, and Kansas are also considering stimulus plans.

To be eligible, individuals must file their income tax returns as full-time Maine residents by October 31. However, they cannot be claimed as a dependent, and their federal adjusted gross income (FAGI) must be below:

  • Individuals who file as singles are eligible for a $100,000 tax credit, while those who file as head of household are eligible for a $150,000 tax credit.
  • $200,000 for married filing jointly couples

Although the first installment of payments will be distributed as early as next month, residents of Maine will continue to receive these checks through June.

“To get this money into the hands of Mainers as quickly as possible,” Mills’ office stated, “the first wave of relief checks will be distributed in June 2022, and will continue to be delivered on a rolling basis through the end of the year as returns are received.”

The Homestead Exemption Program may entitle some individuals to an additional $1,400 in tax relief.

Each taxpayer will receive $850 in relief payments totaling $729.3 million.

The state of New Mexico (NM)

The state legislature has authorized the distribution of tax refunds throughout the summer, with the first payments likely to be made next month.

According to the Taxation and Revenue website of the state, the stimulus measures would provide refundable income tax rebates of $500 for single filers and married persons filing separately and $1,000 for joint filers, heads of households, and surviving spouses.

Single filers will receive $250 in June and August, while joint filers will receive $500 per month.

In New Mexico, married couples filing joint returns, heads of household, and surviving spouses with incomes of less than $150,000 will receive a refundable tax credit of $500.

Single filers and married individuals filing separately with incomes below $75,000 will receive $250.

The refunds will be issued automatically to those who file their 2021 taxes by May 31, and no application is required.
