Steve Harvey perplexed social media users this week when he revealed that he owes the Internal Revenue Service millions of dollars at one point in his long career.

During a recent appearance on the “Earn Your Leisure Podcast” with co-hosts Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings on Tuesday, March 15, the “Family Feud” presenter revisited an issue he previously stated regarding owing the IRS $22 million in 2008. “My accountant died, and his assistant phoned my lawyer and said, ‘We have a problem,'” he explained to the hosts.

“She had discovered on the floor all my tax forms for seven years, signed and stapled with the checks,” the 65-year-old stated. The long-running game show learned that the individuals he hired to manage his finances “were cashing checks, retaining the money, and failing to turn in tax forms.”

When questioned how they were able to use checks written out to the government, Harvey said, “They did not cash them; they transferred the funds to the account that matched the exact number.”

Harvey eventually spent the following seven years repaying $650,000 in monthly payments, which included his current taxes and living expenses.

Nonetheless, this was not the first time Harvey had spoken openly about his financial difficulties. While speaking with Yahoo News in 2016, the West Virginia native stated the incident occurred shortly after he married Majorie, his third wife.

The television celebrity feared losing everything he’d ever owned, including his former fashion designer. “I put my wife down, and she cried, and I embraced her and reassured her that everything would be fine; I would get us out,” he explained.

The host of the game show maintained his promise. “I’ve just arrived at work. I accepted every gig and contract and worked nonstop. I persisted, until a significant agreement came through in 2012, and I was set free. And it’s been fine since then,” he explained.

Harvey’s revelation startled followers, who took to social media to express their shock, with one Twitter user writing, “Steve Harvey owing the IRS millions of dollars due to individuals stealing from him and having to pay $650,000 a month for four years is some weird sh-t.” He was never arrested since he never missed a payment. Bro…” “Can you picture paying a monthly $650,000 payment while while managing your usual daily life?” they continued.

“Steve Harvey exudes an assurance that I have never witnessed in my life. This dude is invincible… This individual was had to pay the IRS $650,000 each month for four years as a result of his accountant stealing his check payments. He always made his payments ON TIME… ON TIME!!! That is a total of $31.2 MILLION DOLLARS.”

“Steve Harvey’s account of paying the IRS $650,000 per month for four years because his accountant was robbing him blind and stealing his cheque payments is insane. It’s unsurprising that he’s been one of the hardest working men in television. Taxes were never going to pay for themselves.”
