This Is Your Final Opportunity to Receive Your Third Stimulus Payment

If you haven’t received your third stimulus payment, or if you only received a portion of one, and believe you are entitled to more, the IRS is giving you another chance to do so—but time is running out.

In January, the IRS announced that all third-stimulus payments had been made. Some people, however, may still be able to claim the amount on their 2021 tax returns. The deadline for filing your taxes for the fiscal year 2021 is April 18, 2021.

As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, more than 175 million third-stimulus payments totaling more than $400 billion began in March 2021.

How to Claim the Unclaimed Third Stimulus Payment on Your 2021 Tax Return.

To request any missed third stimulus payments, you must claim the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2021 tax return.

This is the case if you only received a portion of the stimulus payment (less than the full $1,400) or if you previously did not qualify for the third stimulus payment.

Assume you’re single and your income for the 2020 and 2019 tax years exceeds the threshold (which we’ll discuss later). However, you lost your job in 2021, and your income plummeted. Because your earnings fell below the threshold, you are now eligible for the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit.

Families with additional dependents (such as having or adopting a child) may be eligible for the credit as well.

Furthermore, a few people who still use ITINs to file their taxes may not have received payments for qualified dependents with Social Security numbers.

The Worksheet for Recovery Rebate Tax Credits must be completed and submitted with your 2021 tax return. If you use tax software, you should be guided through the process. Keep in mind that the IRS has predicted a stressful and slow tax season this year, so file as soon as possible.

Before you can complete the spreadsheet, you must know the amount of any third stimulus payments you, your spouse, and any dependents received. The worksheet will also request your adjusted gross income (AGI) for the year in order to determine your eligibility.

If you don’t know how much your third stimulus payment will be, check your IRS online account or use the Get My Payment app. The third stimulus payment amount for 2021 can also be found on your IRS Notice 1444-C, which is a letter sent to recipients by the IRS.

The IRS began distributing Letter 6475 to filers in January, certifying the total amount of the third stimulus payments received for tax year 2021.

Once you’ve determined your correct recovery rebate credit amount, you must declare it on line 30 of your 2021 tax return.

Unlike direct stimulus payments made directly by the federal government to qualified individuals, the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit will either reduce or increase your tax refund.

What Should You Do If You Can’t Find Your Stimulus Check?

If your IRS online account shows that you should have received a stimulus payment but did not, it’s possible that it was lost in the mail. Alternatively, you may have discarded the prepaid debit card that was provided to you.

If you’ve misplaced your stimulus check or suspect it’s been stolen, you can request that the IRS locate it. If the IRS determines that your review was not cashed, you will receive a credit to your account. It will not be able to resend your payment, but you can claim it on your 2021 tax return using the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet.

If the IRS investigates and determines that the check was not cashed, the amount will be credited to your account. The IRS, on the other hand, is unable to reissue your payment. Instead, if you are eligible, you must claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return.

If you misplaced your EIP card, which is a prepaid debit card on which some people received their stimulus payment, you can request a replacement from MetaBank, the card’s provider.

Who can receive the third round of stimulus payments?

If you are a U.S. citizen (or U.S. resident alien) who is not a dependent of another taxpayer, you are generally eligible for the entire third stimulus payment. In addition, your adjusted gross income (AGI) cannot exceed:

  • If married couples file jointly, their total tax liability is $150,000.
  • $112,500 for head of household
  • $75,000 is available for single filers.

If your income is higher than the limits, you may be eligible for a partial payment. However, you will not be paid until your AGI is at least:

  • If married couples file jointly, the total tax is $160,000.
  • $120,000 for head of household
  • A total of $80,000 is available for single filers.

The third stimulus payment is $1,400 per person ($2,800 if married couples file jointly), plus an additional $1,400 for each qualified dependent.
