The IRS Owes South Carolinians $16 Million. Here’s How to Get Yours:

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina  – According to the agency, South Carolinians owe the IRS more than $16 million in unpaid tax returns.

According to the IRS, there are around $1.5 billion in unclaimed tax returns for 2018. April is the deadline for claiming the funds.

“The IRS is committed to assisting taxpayers who are entitled refunds but have not yet submitted their 2018 tax returns,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement. “However, individuals must respond swiftly. By law, these reimbursements are only available for a three-year period, which ends with this year’s April tax deadline. We want to assist individuals in obtaining these refunds, but they must file a 2018 tax return by this vital deadline.”

In 2022, the deadline for filing tax returns is April 18.

According to the IRS, there are 18,063 residents of South Carolina who owe money, with a typical potential refund of $720. Individuals who have not yet submitted their 2018 tax returns may potentially be missing out on the Earned Income Tax Credit.
