The Following Is an Update on the May 2022 Stimulus Check: $750 in State-approved Checks

This news arrives as the likelihood of another round of federal stimulus checks diminishes. On April 28, the office of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz confirmed a bipartisan agreement to provide frontline workers and small business owners with an additional stimulus check. Frontline workers in this state will receive a $750 stimulus check.

Governor Walz issued a statement asserting that his state “continues to demonstrate to the nation” that a divided legislature can “work together to get things done.

“I am proud of this bipartisan agreement to provide hazmat pay to frontline workers and relief to small business owners who sacrificed so much to keep their communities safe and our economy strong during the pandemic.”

Speaker Melissa Hortman also stated that the top priority of the new package is to ensure that frontline workers who worked every day during the worst days of the pandemic receive the promised bonuses from the previous year.

In February, the Minnesota House of Representatives officially approved the plan. The bill quadrupled the $250 million budget for stimulus checks for frontline workers that was approved earlier this year.

Initially, Republicans and Democrats could not agree on who would be eligible for the checks, with Democrats advocating for a broader range of workers to be eligible. At the same time, Republicans desired funding for first responders, nurses, and physicians.

Who is eligible to apply?

The check will be made available to approximately 667 thousand Minnesota workers.

Those who entered the workforce after the pandemic began in 2020 will qualify for the payment. Teachers, healthcare workers, grocery store employees, corrections officers, and others who continue to work in person will qualify as “frontline workers” under the latest legislative package’s definition, which is broader than what Republicans intended.

Residents of Minnesota who are uncertain of their eligibility may apply for the checks online and await a state official’s determination.

When Will I Receive the Checks, and How Do I Apply?

According to Minnesota Commissioner of Labor and Industry Roslyn Robertson, an online application system is currently being developed and will be operational within the next four weeks. Applicants who believe they qualify for a stimulus check must submit an online application and wait 45 days for a response.

Rejected applicants will have an additional 15-day appeal period.

Robertson estimated that ten to twelve weeks would elapse before it would be reasonable to expect checks to leave the building, given the aforementioned timelines.
