Are you eligible for the Child Tax Credit or the stimulus check from the previous year, but have not yet received your payments? If you were exempt from filing a federal tax return this year, you can now submit a claim for those benefits.
GetCTC.org was launched in the fall to assist more low- and no-income Americans in applying for and receiving the expanded child tax credit, a monthly payment of up to $300 per child that was included in the coronavirus relief package.
GetCTC.org was created in collaboration with the White House and Treasury Department by Code for America. The tool, which debuted in late September 2021, was shut down 10 weeks later at the conclusion of the filing season. According to Code for America’s senior program director for tax benefits, David Newville, more than 115,000 families were able to claim over $400 million in tax benefits using the GetCTC tool.
This year, eligible families can utilize the tool to claim the Child Tax Credit for 2021. Parents of a child under the age of six are eligible to receive $3,600 per year, a portion of which is payable monthly at $300. Each child between the ages of 6 and 17 is eligible for $3000 per year, or $250 per month.
Families who have not yet received their third stimulus payment of $1,400 per person can also apply for it.
Instead of filing a full tax return, GetCTC collects information to complete a simplified return requiring only the information necessary to obtain the Child Tax Credit and stimulus payments.
If your family is not required to file a full federal tax return, which generally means you earn less than $12,500 as an individual or $25,100 as a married couple, and less than $400 in self-employment income, you are eligible to use the GetCTC tool.
