Texas Sheriff Arms Deputies With Rifles, Blaming Justice System’s “Failed Policies”

A constable in Harris County, Texas, said his deputies will receive additional AR-15 rifles to better protect the communities they serve, authorities said, citing an increase in crime in the region and the killing of a deputy last year.

Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman blamed the local criminal justice system for the increase in gun violence in a Sunday Facebook post.

“Harris County has devolved into a county of little or no consequence in terms of violent crimes against citizens and attacks on law enforcement,” he said. “Some Judges’ current policies have emboldened suspected criminals to immediately return to the streets and commit additional crimes.”

Herman stated that the deputy constables assigned the rifles have been trained and certified to carry the firearms. Each weapon costs approximately $1,000 in taxpayer funds.

When a commenter inquired as to why the weapons are necessary, Herman responded: “One was used to assassinate our deputy Atkins. They are held by criminals, and we will hold them as well.”

pct. Constable Deputy Kareem Atkins was assassinated in an ambush attack in October 2021 while working an off-duty job. Two additional deputies – Darryl Garrett, 28, and Juqaim Barthen, 26, – were injured in the shooting.
