Stimulus Update 2022: Is Your State Sending Checks to Assist You in Fight Against Inflation?

Consumers struggling to make ends meet as a result of the highest inflation rate in 40 years may receive assistance from federal and state legislation providing refunds, stimulus cheques, or other forms of financial relief to Americans.

Numerous packages that have been authorised or are being considered target specific individuals rather than the general community, which distinguishes them from prior stimulus initiatives, Forbes said. They also include far smaller dollar quantities — mostly to avoid aggravating inflation by injecting additional money into a market where supply already outstrips demand.

“Plans targeted at specific sectors or groups, such as gas cards or disbursements based on income thresholds, could theoretically help alleviate the pain caused by specific goods or services’ prices…without exerting as much pressure on overall prices,” Andrew Patterson, senior international economist at Vanguard, told Forbes.

One such plan, dubbed the Gas Rebate Act of 2022, was recently introduced by a trio of Democratic members of the United States House of Representatives: Reps. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), John Larson (D-Conn.), and Lauren Underwood (D-Conn). (D-Ill.). It would provide qualifying taxpayers with $100 monthly energy rebates and an additional $100 per dependent.

Under this idea, married couples filing jointly with an annual income of up to $150,000 and single filers earning up to $75,000 would receive full payments. Individuals with greater salaries would see their benefits reduced. However, the measure must be approved by Congress, which may prove difficult given that many politicians wish to terminate COVID-era stimulus payouts.

At the state level, as reported by Forbes, the following ideas have already been adopted by legislatures:

Idaho Gov. Brad Little approved a law last month providing people with $350 million in tax rebates. Payments will be sent to full-time Idaho residents who submitted tax returns for 2020 and 2021, as well as full-time Idaho residents who filed returns for grocery credit refunds.
Georgia taxpayers who have filed their tax returns for 2021 and 2022 will receive rebates based on their filing status. The rebates vary from $250 to $500 for single filers and joint filers, respectively. Those who have not yet filed who do so by the April 18 deadline may be eligible to get their rebates as part of their tax refunds.

Indiana taxpayers will get a one-time refund of $125 upon the filing of their 2021 income tax forms. In December 2021, Governor Eric Holcomb announced the measure.

New Jersey: Governor Phil Murphy and state legislators approved a proposal last fall to issue one-time reimbursements of up to $500 to almost one million eligible households. Additionally, taxpayers who file their taxes using a taxpayer identification number rather of their Social Security number may qualify for a $500 one-time reimbursement.

New Mexico: Earlier this month, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed legislation providing a one-time $250 reimbursement to New

Mexico taxpayers. Married couples who file jointly will receive a $500 tax credit. The income qualifying criterion for single taxpayers is $75,000, while for married taxpayers filing jointly, it is $150,000.

Here are some additional states that are considering legislation.

Governor Gavin Newsom of California has suggested spending up to $9 billion on gas refunds for citizens. If the proposal is approved by state lawmakers, checks might be issued within the next several months. Instead of tax returns and income, eligibility would be determined by vehicle registration.

Hawaii: Gov. David Ige proposes to send a $100 tax rebate to every taxpayer in the state, plus an additional $100 for each dependant. The state legislature is still considering the plan.

Kentucky’s Senate authorised a $1 billion payout to taxpayers. If the legislation becomes law, the state will send eligible individuals a one-time rebate of $500 and eligible families a rebate of up to $1,000.

Governor Janet Mills of Maine has proposed mailing eligible residents one-time rebate payments totaling $850. Checks could be mailed in June if authorised.

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota has proposed issuing $500 tax rebate checks to each taxpayer. At the moment, legislators are divided on who should receive the checks.
