Check on the Gas Stimulus: Who Will Receive It and How Much?

California leads the list of states that conduct coronavirus stimulus screenings, according to its Golden State Stimulus programme. State stimulus checks were conducted twice. Now, the state is considering issuing gas stimulus checks to assist households in adjusting to the increased cost of basic necessities, including gasoline.

Though no formal announcement has been made, politicians have allegedly made some progress on this front. According to reports, California residents who pay their state income taxes will receive a $400 rebate ($800 for married couples filing jointly), regardless of their income.

On Thursday, a group of Democratic legislators offered this approach. This $400 figure is the amount that the majority of California residents spend in state excise taxes on gasoline each year.

As previously stated, no formal decision has been made on this front, including when residents would receive their gas stimulus cheques. Many anticipate an official decision on the stimulus payout in June, when the Legislature and Governor Gavin Newsom reach an agreement on the state budget. Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris (D-Irvine), on the other hand, wants the money provided as soon as feasible.

“Our objective is to be able to achieve this in the spring, and everyone here is going to work extremely hard to make that happen,” Petrie-Norris said during a Thursday press conference.

The final determination of who will receive the rebate and in what amount will occur during negotiations with the legislative leadership and governor. The funding for the gas stimulus checks would almost certainly come from the state’s predicted $45 billion budget surplus.

Reduced Gas Taxes Are Another Option

Both Democratic and Republican leaders are poised to approve of gas stimulus checks. Both parties want to assist Californians who are struggling financially as a result of increased prices for the majority of things, including gasoline.

Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher of Yuba City is in favour of distributing gas stimulus cheques. Gallagher also wants to suspend the state’s gas tax in addition to the rebate.

If lawmakers are unable to reach an agreement on gas stimulus checks, they may examine another option, such as lowering the state’s fuel tax rates. Republican legislators believe that suspending the state gas tax for six months is the most effective method to provide immediate financial relief to residents.

However, some lawmakers think that lowering gas taxes will jeopardise crucial road and bridge repair work, as well as other critical transportation projects.
