How to Request a New Social Security Card! Latest Updates!

Your Social Security number is required for a variety of purposes, including applying for a credit card or financing a vehicle. However, you are not frequently required to show your physical card. That is not to say you should not keep your card information current or delay replacing it if you lose it. Indeed, you may still require it in certain circumstances, such as when beginning a new job or obtaining a new driver’s license (in some states).

If you’ve misplaced your Social Security card or changed your name recently for any reason, you can obtain a replacement. However, the method will vary depending on whether you require a new one with updated information or a replacement with no changes.

We’ll walk you through the steps necessary to obtain a new Social Security card in either situation. For additional information, see when it is acceptable to disclose your Social Security number. While you’re here, take a look at the following identity theft protection and monitoring services.

The Social Security Administration offers three different methods for requesting a replacement Social Security card.

There are several ways to obtain a replacement card: in person, online, or via mail. If you meet the requirements, applying online may be the simplest option; however, if you need to request a new card via mail, the administration advises against sending original primary documents that you should keep on hand, such as your driver’s license, passport, or immigration documents.

Additionally, documents must be originals or certified copies by the issuing agency. The administration will not accept photocopies or copies that have been notarized.

If you’re picking up your new card in person or mailing your documents, be sure to also complete Form SS-5 (PDF).

Which documents am I required to present in order to obtain a new Social Security card?

Whichever method you choose – online, in person at a Social Security office, or via mail – you’ll need documents to establish your citizenship, age, and identity.

  • Proof of citizenship in the United States of America: This can be your birth certificate or a US passport. This documentation is required only if you have not yet applied for Social Security citizenship.
  • Proof of age: A birth certificate is preferred, but if you do not have one, the Social Security Administration may accept a religious record created before you turned five years old, a hospital record from a US hospital where you were born, or a US passport.
  • Identification document: This may be a US driver’s license, a US passport, or a state-issued non-driver identification card.

If none of these documents are available, the Social Security Administration may accept one of the following:

  • Identification card for employees
  • Identification card for the school
  • Insurance card for health care (but not a Medicare card)
  • US military identification card

How to obtain a new Social Security card without having to make any changes

The simplest method is to request a new card online, which is especially convenient if you live far from a Social Security office.

To get started, you’ll need to create a My Social Security account. Once logged in, you should see a link at the top that says Replace your Social Security Card.

After clicking the link, a series of questions will be asked to determine your eligibility to request a replacement card online. Finally, you’ll need to verify your identity by answering several additional questions and then signing your name electronically before submitting your request.

Who is not eligible to apply for a card online?

  • Alaskans, New Hampshire residents, Oklahoma residents, and West Virginia residents.
  • Individuals requesting a name change – or any other change – to their identification card.
  • Individuals who possess a driver’s license or identification card issued by a United States territory, such as American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands.

If you prefer to request a new card in person, here is a list of local offices where you can schedule an appointment. And if you’d prefer to mail your request, here’s how to locate the mailing address for the office closest to you.

You must complete and submit this form regardless of whether you visit an office in person or mail in your request.

How to obtain a replacement Social Security card if your name or other identifying information has changed

If you legally changed your name for any reason – such as marriage, divorce, or a court order – you must notify Social Security to obtain a corrected card. You can submit the required documents in person or via mail to a nearby Social Security office. You cannot request a new card with updated information online.

As with requesting a new card without changes, you must provide proof of US citizenship, documentation of your legal name change, and a form of identification.

When you receive your new card, it will bear your new name and the same Social Security number.
