Now that the tax filing deadline has passed, if you filed on time, you can expect to receive your tax refund. If you filed a paper tax return and did not set up direct deposit, your check will be mailed to you. But when will it actually arrive?
The US Postal Service has a tracking tool that will tell you when your tax refund will arrive in your mailbox. It’s called Informed Delivery, and the free USPS service sends you notifications when new mail arrives, as well as images of the front of letters, so you know exactly what’s coming. It does not photograph your incoming packages, but it does track them and allows you to add an electronic signature to receive packages when you are not at home.
We’ll walk you through the steps of setting up and using USPS Informed Delivery. Learn about the biggest tax changes this year, CNET’s picks for the best tax software for 2022, and how to notify the IRS and USPS that you’ve moved for more information about tax season and the post office.
Track your check directly to your mailbox with USPS Informed Delivery.
The USPS’s Informed Delivery service is a free mail-tracking service that automatically scans your incoming letters and can send you an image whenever something with your name on it is about to be delivered.
The USPS creates a digital image of the front of all letter-size mail when it runs it through its automated sorting equipment. Anyone who signs up for Informed Delivery can take advantage of that information by requesting that USPS notify them when each piece of mail bearing their name is on its way. Please keep in mind that activating your account may take up to three days.
As part of the program, you will receive an email every morning, Monday through Saturday, informing you that your mail has been delivered. You’ll also see a grayscale image of the front of the letter. Informed Delivery also has free Android and iOS apps.
Just keep in mind that signing up means you’ll receive all mail scanned by the post office. You have the option to cancel the service at any time. Continue reading for information on how to sign up for Informed Delivery.
The post office can also track your packages.
You can check the delivery status of your packages and when they’re expected to arrive using Informed Delivery. However, the post office does not photograph your packages. You can use the service to generate an electronic signature so that you can receive packages even if you are not at home.
How to Receive Notifications for USPS Informed Delivery
There are some limitations to informed delivery. It will, for example, work with many residential and personal post office box addresses, but not with business addresses. It will also not work in some residential buildings where the USPS has not yet identified each unit.
