Another lawsuit has been filed by Donald Trump! This time, Trump is suing CNN for defamation, accusing the network of waging a “campaign of libel and slander” against him by leveraging its power as a major news organization to defeat him politically.
How Come Trump is Suing CNN?
The 29-page lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Monday, October 3, says that the 76-year-old former President wants $475 million in punitive damages for “embarrassment, grief, humiliation, and mental agony” caused by CNN’s coverage.
In the lawsuit, he says that the network ignored all “good” information about him and instead “tilted” the political balance to the left in the years leading up to 2024 when he might run for president.
The lawsuit says that the network has been insulting the former president for a long time, but that it is now getting worse about it “because CNN thinks the plaintiff will run for president in 2024,” which he has not yet said.
“CNN has sought to use its massive influence, supposedly as a “trusted” news source, to defame the plaintiff in the minds of its viewers and readers to defeat him politically,” the lawsuit says, before listing some of the “defamatory” labels it has given Trump.

“As part of a coordinated effort to shift the political balance to the left,” the lawsuit says, “CNN has tried to tarnish the plaintiff with a series of increasingly scandalous, false, and defamatory labels like ‘racist,’ ‘Russian lackey,’ ‘insurrectionist,’ and finally ‘Hitler.'”
“When a public official or political candidate is compared to Hitler, the statement implies a trait or condition that would make it hard for them to do their job well,” the lawsuit said. “
CNN published these defamatory claims with actual malice, in that they knew the Plaintiff’s character was false, defamatory, and provocative, or they published the claims without caring whether they were true or not.”
This is not the first time Trump has said bad things about the media. Back in 2020, Trump’s campaign to get re-elected sued The New York Times and The Washington Post over op-eds that suggested Russian officials and Trump’s 2016 campaign worked together. His suit against The Times was thrown out, but it is still going on against The Post.
The US Department of Justice is looking into whether Trump plans to keep government data at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida after he leaves office in January 2021.
Meanwhile, a congressional committee is still looking into the January 6 riots at the US Capitol. Also, New York State Attorney General Letitia James has filed a separate lawsuit against him, three of his adult children, and the Trump Organization as a whole for years of fraud, including breaking state criminal laws, manipulating lenders and insurers, and inflating assets.
