A $1,250 Stimulus Check Could Be on the Way to You

Last year, the Child Tax Credit was expanded, resulting in monthly stimulus payments of up to $300 for qualifying families.

It was not, however, extended until 2022, which means that many low-income people have been without a paycheck since December. This may change in the near future as the new stimulus check offer is written.

Stimulus Check

Republican Senator Mitt Romney of Utah introduced the Family Security Act, which is similar to the Child Tax Credit but provides additional funding.

Eligibility for Stimulus Checks Is Still Being Negotiated

Families will receive a $350 monthly stimulus payment for each child under the age of six, and a $250 stimulus payment for each child aged six to seventeen.

The maximum monthly stipend per household is $1,250. Every family with one tax filer earning less than $200K and every household with two tax filers earning less than $400K will be eligible for the full benefit. It will be distributed to those who earn more, but it will be reduced by $50 for every $1,000 earned above those levels.

Unlike the CTC, the proposal comes with a catch: claimants must volunteer, train, or work for at least 80 hours per month, which is likely why it hasn’t been made public yet. While both parties agree that helping families is important, the addition of a job condition is a contentious issue that is currently being resolved. Nonetheless, given the White House’s emphasis on preserving the Federal Child Tax Credit for “years and years to come,” this may be a reasonable compromise.
